# How Shopify product and combined quantity limits work

> Compare product, variant, individual and combined quantity limits. Choose the right entry, understand checkout minimums and check overlapping rules.

Quantity limits set a minimum, a maximum, or both. Edit a product or variant directly, or create rules for all products, selected products or collections.

## Choose the right entry point

| Entry point | Use it for | Required switch |
| - | - | - |
| **Quantity limits by product** | Individual product and variant thresholds | **Enable product quantity limits** |
| **All quantity rules** | Product ranges and calculation methods | **Enable quantity rules** |
| **Customer tag quantity rules** | Different customer-group allowances | **Enable quantity rules** |
| **Cumulative purchase rules** | Restricting repeat purchases | **Enable quantity rules** |

Also enable **Cart and checkout validation** on the quantity overview page.

## Product versus variant

A product-level limit combines its variants. One small and two medium shirts of the same product count as 3 units.

A variant-level limit checks that variant separately. If the medium variant has a maximum of 1, two mediums are blocked even if the product has remaining allowance.

In **Quantity limits by product**, search for a product and edit its status, minimum and maximum. Expand variants to set their own thresholds. Confirm changes have saved, then test the storefront.

## Individual versus combined

| Calculation | With a maximum of 3 |
| - | - |
| **Limit each applicable item individually** | Product A can have 3 units and product B can also have 3; variants of one product are combined |
| **Limit the combined cart quantity of applicable items** | A × 1 plus B × 2 uses the shared allowance |

## Minimums and timing

Leave the minimum blank or set it to `0` for no minimum. Fill at least one of the minimum or maximum fields.

Quantity minimums are checked at checkout so customers can add items one at a time. Maximums follow the rule’s selected timing.

> [!WARNING]
>
> A minimum is not a purchase multiple. A minimum of 6 also permits 7 units. There is no quantity-step setting in the current rule editor.

## When rules overlap

Individual quantity rules use the first matching rule in **All rules**. Product-level limits, variant limits, combined rules and cumulative rules have different combination behavior. Read [rule priority](https://order-limit.xrtotech.com/en/settings/rule-priority.md).

Try [a 2-unit product cap](https://order-limit.xrtotech.com/en/scenarios/limited-release.md) or [a 3-unit collection cap](https://order-limit.xrtotech.com/en/scenarios/mix-and-match.md).

## Set a color or size limit

For “product maximum 3, blue maximum 1,” follow [product and variant setup](https://order-limit.xrtotech.com/en/getting-started/product-variant-limits.md). For one allowance across different products, use combined rules rather than identical product-row caps.
