# Shopify weight limit: up to 20 kg of merchandise

> Cap Shopify merchandise weight at 20 kg. Check variant data and units, activate the rule and test 20 kg allowed versus 22 kg blocked at checkout.

Your fulfillment process needs merchandise in each order to weigh no more than 20 kg. A weight rule totals product variant weights; it does not include boxes or packing materials.

## When to use this

Use this when merchandise weight needs an order cap. The 20 kg example must be adapted to your shipping process and packaging allowance.

## Before you begin

Prepare products weighing 2 kg and 500 g per unit. Check every selected variant and correct missing weights in Shopify.

## Settings

Open the app home page → **Weight rules** → create a weight rule.

| Setting | Example value |
| - | - |
| Rule name | Maximum merchandise weight 20 kg |
| Rule weight unit | kg |
| Minimum weight | Leave blank |
| Maximum weight | 20 |
| Applicable products | All products |
| Applicable customers | All customers |
| Timing | Checkout only |

## Steps

1. Open **Apps** → **订单限购** in Shopify. From the app home page, open **重量规则** and click **创建重量规则**.
2. Check variant weights under **按产品设置重量限制** first. In the rule, select `kg` under **规则重量单位**, then enter a maximum of `20`.
3. Enter the rule name and thresholds from the settings table. The name is for admin use only.
4. Under **规则应用于**, select the scope in the table. For selected products or collections, click **选择产品** or **选择产品系列** and confirm the selected names appear.
5. Set the timing from the table. Under **保存后的状态**, select **已启用** and click **保存并启用**. When editing an existing rule, click **保存并启用**.
6. Return to **重量限制** and turn on **开启重量规则**. Wait for saving to complete and check for errors.
7. Reopen the rule to confirm its thresholds, scope, customer conditions and active state were saved. Run the storefront tests below.

## Test your configuration

Each result describes this recipe only. Keep the product scope consistent and verify checkout; other active rules may still block the cart.

| Test | Expected result for this scenario |
| - | - |
| 10 units at 2 kg each | Allowed: 20 kg |
| 11 units at 2 kg each | Blocked: 22 kg |
| 2 units at 500 g + 9 units at 2 kg | Allowed: 19 kg |
| A variant has no valid weight | Correct its data before testing the weight cap |

> [!WARNING]
>
> The rule does not split orders, calculate shipping charges or choose a shipping method. Lower the merchandise cap yourself if you need to reserve weight for packaging.

## If results differ

If 11 units of 2 kg pass, check the purchased variant weight, scope, rule unit and feature switch.
